In the old days it was called "typesetting".

Now, in the digital age of computers, there are special softwares for desktop publishing. The books, magazines, guides, directories, etc. that you see or read have been set up with a layout of pages. The layout artist then gets the files ready for printing. This is a part of my graphic design job that I love doing especially when I get to do the design work as well.
